How to Improve Your SEO Score: A Step-by-Step Guide

Your SEO score reflects the health of your website across technical, content, and performance signals. Here's exactly how to improve it, step by step.


An SEO score is only useful if you understand what's driving it down and what fixing it will actually achieve. Most site owners see a number — 54 out of 100, say — and have no idea which issues are responsible for it or where to start.

This guide explains exactly what an SEO score measures, why certain issues carry more weight than others, and how to improve your score systematically rather than randomly patching issues in whatever order a tool surfaces them.


What an SEO Score Actually Measures

An SEO score is an aggregate health metric. Different tools calculate it differently, but all of them are pulling signals from the same underlying categories:

Technical health — Can search engines crawl and index your site correctly? Are there broken links, redirect chains, missing sitemaps, misconfigured robots.txt files, or indexation errors blocking your content?

On-page signals — Are your title tags, meta descriptions, H1s, and URL structures correctly optimised? Are there duplicate or missing tags?

Content quality — Does your content demonstrate expertise and depth? Is there thin content or duplicate content pulling the average down?

Performance — How do your Core Web Vitals measure? LCP, INP, and CLS are confirmed ranking signals and directly affect user experience.

Structured data — Is schema markup present, valid, and complete? Missing or broken schema represents missed opportunity for rich results and AI search visibility.

Step 1: Fix Crawlability Issues

Start at the foundation. Crawlability problems are the most severe issues on any site because they prevent search engines from accessing your content at all. Fixing on-page signals is pointless if Googlebot can't reach the pages.

Check your robots.txt

Fetch yourdomain.com/robots.txt directly in your browser. Look for any Disallow rules that are accidentally blocking important sections of your site. A common misconfiguration looks like:

Disallow: /

That single line blocks the entire site. It happens more often than it should, usually when a developer sets up staging-site crawl blocking and forgets to revert it on launch.

Also check whether your robots.txt is blocking CSS, JavaScript, or image directories. Google needs to render your pages to understand them — blocking these resources effectively blindfolds the crawler.

Verify your XML sitemap

Your sitemap should be submitted in Google Search Console and should contain only canonical, indexable URLs. Common problems:

  • Sitemap includes redirecting URLs (should be the destination URL instead)
  • Sitemap includes noindex pages (contradictory signal)
  • Sitemap hasn't been updated since the site was last restructured

Identify and fix redirect chains

A redirect chain is when URL A redirects to URL B, which redirects to URL C. Each hop costs a small amount of link authority and adds latency. Use a crawler to map all redirects and collapse chains to single hops where possible.

Find and resolve crawl errors

In Google Search Console, go to Pages → Not indexed. Work through the categories: pages blocked by robots.txt that shouldn't be, pages returning server errors (5xx), and pages returning soft 404s (showing 200 status but effectively empty content).


Step 2: Fix On-Page Signals

Once you're confident search engines can access your content, on-page signals are typically the fastest wins available. These are largely metadata and structural issues that can be fixed systematically across a site.

Audit title tags

Every page should have a unique title tag between 50 and 60 characters. Run a crawl and export a list of all title tags, then filter for:

  • Missing title tags
  • Duplicate title tags (same title on multiple pages)
  • Titles over 60 characters (truncated in SERPs)
  • Titles under 30 characters (underutilised)

For each page, the title should include the primary target keyword — ideally near the start — and accurately describe the page content. Avoid title tags that are just your brand name repeated across dozens of pages.

Audit meta descriptions

Meta descriptions don't directly influence rankings, but they influence click-through rate — and CTR affects how much traffic your rankings actually deliver. Target 145–155 characters. Include a clear reason to click. Avoid keyword stuffing.

Audit heading structure

Every page should have exactly one H1 that incorporates the primary keyword. Supporting sections should use H2 headings; subsections within those should use H3. Don't use heading tags for visual styling — that's what CSS is for.

Fix URL structure

Short, descriptive, lowercase URLs with hyphens as separators outperform long dynamic URLs on both click-through rate and crawl efficiency. If your URLs contain session IDs, tracking parameters, or auto-generated numeric strings, use canonical tags or URL parameter handling to prevent duplicate content from being indexed.


Step 3: Improve Content Depth and Quality

Technical and on-page fixes will move your score, but content quality is what determines long-term ranking stability. This step is harder than the first two but has the greatest lasting impact.

Identify and fix thin content

"Thin content" means pages that don't provide enough value to justify their existence as standalone URLs. Common examples:

  • Service area pages duplicated across dozens of cities with only the city name changed
  • Tag archive pages with three or four posts
  • Category pages with no unique description content
  • Blog posts under 400 words that don't fully answer the topic

The fix is either to consolidate thin pages (redirect to a stronger version) or to substantially expand them with genuinely useful content.

Resolve duplicate content

Duplicate content — multiple URLs serving identical or near-identical page content — splits ranking signals and creates ranking instability. Use canonical tags to tell search engines which version is authoritative, or use 301 redirects to eliminate duplicates entirely.

Common sources of duplicate content: www vs. non-www versions, HTTP vs. HTTPS versions (if both are live), trailing slash vs. no trailing slash, print-friendly page variants, and faceted navigation on e-commerce sites.

Strengthen E-E-A-T signals

Google's quality rater guidelines place significant weight on Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. For sites in competitive or sensitive verticals, this matters considerably for ranking. Practical improvements include:

  • Named authors with linked author bios showing relevant credentials
  • Citing primary sources and data
  • Clear About pages that establish who is behind the site
  • Review and testimonial content that validates claims
  • Last-updated dates on content where recency matters

Step 4: Improve Core Web Vitals Performance

Core Web Vitals — Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — are confirmed ranking signals. More importantly, they're direct measures of how fast and usable your site is.

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) — target under 2.5 seconds

LCP measures how long the main content element (usually your hero image or largest heading) takes to render. The most common causes of poor LCP:

  • Slow server response time (TTFB): Anything over 800ms needs investigation. Consider server-side caching, a CDN, or a faster hosting tier.
  • Unoptimised hero images: Large images (over 200KB) that aren't compressed or in next-gen formats (WebP/AVIF) are a frequent culprit.
  • Render-blocking resources: CSS and JavaScript files that block the browser from rendering the page. Move critical CSS inline; defer non-critical JS.
  • No preloading of LCP image: Add <link rel="preload"> for your hero image to give the browser an early hint.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP) — target under 200 milliseconds

INP measures the responsiveness of your page throughout a user's entire visit — not just the first interaction. Poor INP is almost always caused by JavaScript execution blocking the main thread. Audit your JS payload:

  • Remove unused JavaScript
  • Split large bundles and load non-critical code on demand
  • Defer analytics and marketing scripts that don't need to run immediately

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — target under 0.1

CLS measures visual instability — how much elements jump around as the page loads. Fix it by:

  • Setting explicit width and height attributes on all images and video elements
  • Reserving space for ads and dynamically injected content
  • Using font-display: optional or font-display: swap to reduce layout shift from web font loading

Step 5: Add and Fix Structured Data

Structured data (schema markup) helps search engines understand your content beyond its raw text. It unlocks rich results in Google and improves how your content is interpreted by AI search engines.

Implement core schema types

At minimum, every site should have:

  • Organisation schema on the homepage (brand name, logo, contact details)
  • BreadcrumbList schema on all inner pages
  • Article or BlogPosting schema on editorial content

E-commerce sites need Product schema with price, availability, and review aggregation. Sites with genuine FAQ sections should implement FAQ schema.

Validate every implementation

A common mistake is implementing schema and never checking whether it's valid. Use Google's Rich Results Test to validate every schema type on key pages. Errors — missing required fields, incorrect property types — prevent rich results from being triggered even when the schema is present.
