Model Context Protocol (MCP)

An open standard developed by Anthropic that allows AI models to connect to external tools, data sources, and services — enabling AI assistants to take actions in the real world.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard published by Anthropic in November 2024 that defines how AI models communicate with external tools and data sources. It provides a standardised interface through which AI assistants — like Claude — can query databases, call APIs, read files, and take actions beyond their training data.

MCP works through a client-server architecture. An MCP server exposes tools and resources; an MCP client (the AI model or the application hosting it) sends requests and receives responses. The protocol is model-agnostic and language-agnostic, allowing any application to become an MCP server.

For SEO and marketing teams, MCP is significant because it enables AI assistants to access live, up-to-date data about your brand's SEO performance, AI visibility scores, and audit results — directly from within the AI conversation. Instead of exporting reports and pasting data into a chat interface, you can ask your AI assistant to "check my AEO score" and receive a real-time answer.

Surfaceable provides an MCP server for Growth and Pro plan users, allowing AI coding assistants and productivity tools to query Surfaceable data programmatically.

Example

A growth marketer connects Surfaceable's MCP server to their Claude Desktop app. They can now ask 'What's my brand's mention rate on Perplexity this week?' and receive an instant answer drawn from live Surfaceable data — without opening the dashboard.

Common questions

How is MCP different from a regular API?

A regular API requires you to write code to call it. MCP is designed so that AI models themselves can discover and call tools automatically, based on natural language instructions — without the user needing to write any code.

Which AI tools support MCP?

Claude (Anthropic), Claude Desktop, and a growing list of third-party AI tools and IDEs support MCP. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly since the protocol's publication in late 2024.
